GadgetGuy participated in an interesting teleconference (using Microsoft teams) hosted by Vitaly Kamluk, Kaspersky Director of APAC Research Group. What is the best cybersecurity practice in a pandemic?

I won't go into the full hour but highlight a few of the main points. The best security during a pandemic is to remain vigilant to the millions of scams trying to get you to click on a link.

How to stay safe working remotely during a pendemic

Using work computers at home

Many bought their work computers home (as they should) but remember that these usually have some form of central support and updating. The longer the lockdown goes on, the more that central patching becomes out of date. Talk to your system administrator to see how to keep up to date.

Many companies have opened remote desktop or server access via RDP (remote desktop), FTP (file transfer protocol) or similar. That is wrong, and you need to use a secure cloud-like Microsoft OneDrive to share files.

Business needs to increase response/awareness/action plans! They must be more vigilant as the weakest link – a home computer – could compromise the office network.

They must insist on 2FA or Biometric logins and change passwords regularly. All access to a corporate network should be via a VPN – whether via a PC or mobile.

Bought a computers and don't have enterprise protection

Many have bought or used home computers but are unaware of the need to keep them patched and run strong, paid antivirus and malware endpoint protection. They have no budget for cybersecurity, so they use free software like Windows Defender, free VPNs etc. Again, talk to your system administrator if you have one and get paid protection.


Don't know how to identify if something is not quite right

If your computer is sluggish, popping up ads or doing things you don't think are right, then act now. Get to know where you can get emergency cyber response assets/people and turn the computer off until they can respond. If they do it remotely be very sure of their pedigree as granting remote access gives them full access to your computer – as if it was you.

Protect your home network

Look at network intrusion prevention devices like D-Link's D-Fend router that stops the millions of automated bots getting into your router via weak passwords or unprotected devices. Change router passwords regularly.

What are the scams to be aware of?

Help by reporting scams to Scamwatch – there are new ones all the time. Use common sense and be sceptical – have a clear mind – people are the weakest link.

  • Lots of COVID named malware
  • COVID games!
  • WHO Scams abound
  • Online purchasing scams for medical, drugs and other equipment
  • Email
    • close down orders – open remote access – or you cant access work computers!
    • money reimbursement offers to go directly to an employee bank account
    • the promise of vaccine especially with a WHO logo
  • Other topics – all scams

Social engineering 'spear-phishing' is growing. Perhaps the lockdown means more people are trying to make money by scams. Cybercriminals are working hard!

Stop sending/forwarding/looking for COVID themed emails/releases. It is not socially responsible to play on fear, and a good percentage will be scams.

Google Drive Uploads: From 1 Hr. to Completion to 46+ Hrs. Never Finished - All Other Applications - BleepingComputer

Hi, everyone. I am suddenly experiencing a frustrating issue with Google Drive.

To describe the difficulty, I'll sketch how Drive uploads performed for me -- hundreds of times, I'll add -- before the problem, and how things are going now.

I work with video files. I record and do preliminary editing, then I upload them to Drive so that another person can edit them more thoroughly. Just to give you an idea...

BEFORE THE PROBLEM: An .mp4 upload of around 2.5GB took might have taken ~55 minutes on my connection. The Drive upload estimate would begin at a reasonable amount of time -- say, 45-60 minutes -- and then steadily decrease until the upload was complete. Occasionally, I may have had some issue. But, that's basically how it worked. Time after time after time.

Now (over the past seven or so days), I'm having a major issue. It may or may not have arisen after a Windows update. There WAS a recent update. But I don't recall the time correspondence precisely.

AFTER THE PROBLEM: Google Drive begins by giving me an absurdly low estimate, for instance: "Less than a minute left." Then, as the upload starts, the estimate gets bigger, and bigger, and BIGGER. So, in one case, I was trying to upload a video file (let's say it was about 1GB). This would have taken less than an hour a week ago. The other day, **after two hours**, the estimate read "21 hours... remaining." Crazy. Or again, I tried again with a different file (maybe 2GB). I just let the thing go. Walked away. After 6+ hours, the thing was still going and the estimated time remaining literally read "46 hours." Absolutely insufferable! (I canceled both uploads.)

Here's what I have tried:

(1) clearing Chrome cache

(2) closing & restarting browser

(3) running CCleaner.exe

(4) restarting PC

(5) logging out of Google account (gmail) & logging back in

(6) using MS Edge instead of Chrome (same result)

(7) resetting WiFi

(8) switching 2G to 5G & back

(9) uninstalling & reinstalling Chrome (2x)

Nothing I have tried has worked on the affected PC.

I was able to put the video file on an external hard drive and then upload it to Drive from another computer in my house (via Chrome).

Here's a wrinkle.

I noticed that this affected PC had "Backup and Sync" installed. But (a.) I do not recall installing this; (b.) when I clicked it, I had never signed into it; and (c.) when I went to the other two PCs in my house to check how I had signed into Backup and Sync on other machines, I discovered that they did not appear to have the program installed at all. So... in addition to steps (1)-(8), above, also:

(10) I tried logging into Backup and Sync using the same gmail account that I was attempting to accessing with Drive. This maneuver appeared to do nothing to solve my trouble. And the act of signing in trigger a series of questions that I didn't know how to answer (since I wasn't AIMING to *use* Backup and Sync... I was aiming to get Drive to work). And the answers I provided began a convoluted cascade of "syncing" (it started as 250 files, then 500, then... 1,000) that just seemed to me to have the potential of making the problem worse. So...

(11) I uninstalled Backup and Sync using Windows' "Add and Remove Programs" function in Control Panel.

I restarted the PC once more. And... same problem.
